Introduction

Electrical safety is a paramount concern for businesses in the United Kingdom. Ensuring a safe working environment not only protects employees but also safeguards the business itself from potential risks and legal consequences. Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is a crucial process that helps businesses identify and address electrical hazards effectively. In this blog post, we will emphasise the importance of prioritising PAT testing, highlighting the benefits it offers and the significant role it plays in safeguarding your business.

           Protecting Your Employees and Customers

The well-being of your employees and customers should be a top priority. By making PAT testing a priority, you demonstrate a commitment to their safety. Faulty electrical appliances can pose serious risks, leading to electrical shocks, fires, or other accidents. PAT testing helps identify potential hazards, such as damaged wiring, faulty plugs, or defective equipment, ensuring that they are repaired or replaced promptly. By prioritising PAT testing, you create a secure working environment, instil confidence in your workforce, and enhance customer trust.

           Compliance with Legal Requirements

In the UK, employers have a legal obligation to ensure the safety of electrical appliances in the workplace. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 establish the legal framework for electrical safety. These regulations stipulate that electrical appliances should be maintained in a safe condition and regularly tested to prevent danger. By prioritising PAT testing, you demonstrate compliance with these legal requirements, protecting your business from potential penalties and legal liabilities.

Minimising the Risk of Accidents and Fires

Electrical accidents and fires can have devastating consequences for businesses. They can lead to property damage, loss of critical data, and disruption of operations, impacting productivity and profitability. Prioritising PAT testing helps identify potential faults or hazards in electrical appliances before they escalate into accidents or fires. By addressing these issues proactively, you minimise the risk of such incidents, safeguard your assets, and ensure business continuity.

           Maintaining Insurance Coverage

Many insurance providers require businesses to adhere to electrical safety regulations, including PAT testing. By prioritising PAT testing, you ensure that you meet the insurance company's requirements, maintaining adequate coverage for potential electrical-related incidents. Failing to comply with these requirements may result in a denial of claims or reduced coverage, exposing your business to financial risks. Prioritising PAT testing helps protect your business by maintaining comprehensive insurance coverage.

           Enhancing Reputation and Customer Confidence

A business with a strong commitment to safety and compliance enjoys a positive reputation among customers, suppliers, and stakeholders. Prioritising PAT testing demonstrates that you take electrical safety seriously, instilling confidence in your stakeholders. Customers will trust that the products or services they receive from your business are safe, further enhancing their loyalty. Additionally, showcasing your commitment to safety through PAT testing can differentiate you from competitors and attract safety-conscious clients.

Cost Savings in the Long Run

While PAT testing incurs an initial investment, it can result in long-term cost savings. By identifying and addressing potential electrical hazards early on, you prevent accidents, property damage, and the need for extensive repairs. Regular testing helps prolong the lifespan of electrical appliances, reducing the frequency of replacements. Moreover, prioritising PAT testing can help you avoid legal penalties, insurance claim denials, and reputational damage, all of which can incur significant financial burdens.

           Conclusion

Prioritising PAT testing is an essential step towards ensuring the electrical safety of your business. By protecting your employees and customers, complying with legal requirements, minimising the risk of accidents and fires, maintaining insurance coverage, enhancing your reputation, and achieving long-term cost savings, you create a secure and sustainable business environment. Make PAT testing a priority to safeguard your business, demonstrate your commitment to safety, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have taken the necessary steps to mitigate electrical risks.

Emergency lighting plays a critical role in maintaining safety and preventing panic during unforeseen situations such as power outages or emergencies. In the United Kingdom, where stringent regulations govern workplace safety, testing emergency lighting systems is of paramount importance. This blog explores the significance of regularly testing emergency lighting systems, the legal requirements in the UK, and the benefits it brings to businesses and public spaces.

           1. Ensuring Compliance with Regulations

In the UK, several laws and regulations are in place to safeguard the welfare of employees, visitors, and customers. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 mandates that emergency lighting systems should be installed and maintained properly to ensure the safe evacuation of occupants during an emergency. Regular testing and maintenance of these systems are vital to ensure compliance with these regulations.

           2. Promoting Safety and Well-being

Emergency lighting serves as a reliable source of illumination when the main power supply fails, ensuring the safe evacuation of individuals from a building. In the event of a fire, for example, smoke and darkness can obstruct escape routes, leading to chaos and potential injuries. Well-maintained emergency lighting systems provide a clear and well-illuminated pathway to guide people to safety, minimising the risk of accidents and panic.

           3. Identifying Faults and Defects

Regular testing of emergency lighting systems enables the identification and rectification of faults and defects promptly. Through scheduled testing, issues such as failed bulbs, damaged batteries, faulty wiring, or poor signage can be detected and rectified before they compromise the effectiveness of the system. Timely repairs and replacements help ensure that the emergency lighting system remains fully functional when needed.

           4. Preventing Litigation and Liability

In the UK, employers have a legal obligation to protect the health and safety of their employees and visitors. Failure to comply with safety regulations, including proper maintenance and testing of emergency lighting systems, can result in legal consequences, including fines, prosecution, and damage to a business's reputation. By conducting regular tests and adhering to legal requirements, businesses can minimise the risk of litigation and ensure they fulfil their duty of care.

           5. Enhancing Emergency Preparedness

Testing emergency lighting systems is an integral part of emergency preparedness planning. Regular tests simulate emergency scenarios, allowing staff members to practise evacuation procedures and familiarise themselves with the layout and functionality of emergency exits and lighting. This preparation improves response times, reduces confusion, and increases the chances of a successful evacuation during an actual emergency.

           6. Boosting Occupant Confidence

Public spaces, workplaces, and commercial buildings often accommodate a diverse range of individuals, including employees, customers, and visitors. Reliable and well-maintained emergency lighting systems instil confidence in occupants, assuring them that appropriate safety measures are in place. By prioritising the testing and maintenance of emergency lighting systems, businesses and public institutions demonstrate their commitment to occupant safety and well-being.

           7. Addressing Changing Environment and Needs

Over time, the layout and use of buildings may change due to renovations, alterations, or expansions. Consequently, emergency lighting systems may require adjustments to ensure adequate coverage and compliance with safety regulations. Regular testing provides an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the existing system and make necessary modifications to meet evolving needs, maintaining a high level of safety for all occupants.

           8. Demonstrating Corporate Social Responsibility

Testing emergency lighting systems aligns with the principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Organisations that prioritise safety and commit to regular testing of their emergency lighting systems showcase their dedication to protecting their employees, customers, and the community at large. Demonstrating CSR not only helps build a positive brand image but also fosters a sense of trust and loyalty among stakeholders.

           Conclusion

Testing emergency lighting systems is not only a legal requirement in the UK but also an essential practice to ensure the safety and well-being of occupants in public spaces and workplaces. By adhering to regulations, regularly testing emergency lighting, and promptly addressing any issues, businesses can create a safe environment, prevent panic during emergencies, and protect themselves from legal liabilities. Prioritising the testing of emergency lighting systems not only enhances safety but also reflects a commitment to corporate social responsibility, instilling confidence in occupants and fostering a positive brand image.

You've read it, heard it and said it more than a thousand times in the last week, but we really are in unprecedented times. Before anything else, we want to wish every one of you the very best of health and hope that you can stay healthy in these most uncertain of times. We here at Purplewood Electrical have our eyes glued on developments but importantly, we are still working. There are many small businesses who will be worried about surviving, just like ourselves, but our hearts go out to you all.

On Friday, 20th March, the PAT Testing Trade Association sent an open letter regarding PAT testing, which you can see in full below. Please take a moment to read through it. You may now be working from home, or be one of a few that are still going in, but the result of this means PAT Testing can be carried out at the workplace without interrupting your day to day activities. Unless we are told otherwise, we will be still be working and still visiting clients. We will follow any COVID-19 stipulations you may make - temperature tests, masks, anti-bac hand gel, gloves, we don't mind, we will prioritise your health and ours.

We are a small business, very small in fact, but with BIG plans to be so much more. We have an opportunity to continue trading currently, and aim to make the most of it all the time we can. To do so though, we still need enquiries and new clients. If you know your PAT Testing is due, please do give us a call on 01323 707808 or email info@purplewood.co.uk and we'll be happy to help.

PAT Testing is about keeping people safe and it shouldn't be ignored. We understand it might not seem like a priority currently, but at a time when keeping people healthy is at the forefront, it should be a reminder as to how important it is.

So you're looking to find the best PAT Testing business to come and test your portable appliances. That's easy right, just do a quick online search and hey-presto. Except, finding someone to come out and PAT Test your appliances is one thing, getting the best deal for your business is totally another. Obviously, we would love you to choose Purplewood PAT Testers but we wont always be the best option for everyone. We know this, and we wont pretend otherwise. The thing we want most of all is to know businesses make informed decisions about who they choose for PAT Testing. To help with with this, below are some of the things to consider.

            Price

It was always going to be top of the list, but maybe not for the same reason you thought. You see, getting the cheapest deal sounds like an easy thing to look for, except different PAT Testing companies, charge very differently. Some will charge a day rate for labour, possibly by adding on the cost of labels, and this will generally be quite comparable to other trades. The usual issues arise though, is it really going to take all day? Maybe half a day? Will it be dragged out to cover half a day? If this is what you are going for, make sure you are happy with the estimated time of the job, and a price is agreed before hand. Things may arise that slow down the job, so make sure you understand how the cost may rise if this happens.

The next pricing structure is per testing per item, and is probably the most widely accepted way of doing things. Again, this comes with things to consider. How much should an item cost to test? Prices vary greatly, for many different reasons. Somewhere between £0.60 and £2.00 is a good guide, but we've seen lower and much higher prices quoted. If you have a few items to test, expect to pay towards the top end of this guide. If you have thousands of items to test, you'll be looking for the bottom end. This won't be the end of the costs though. Are there charges for call outs, site surveys, plug repairs, re-tests and others? Remember to ask. The lowest price per item will not always be lowest quote.

A third pricing option exists, similar to how we quote at Purplewood PAT Testers. That is to have an initial inclusive fee for a set amount of products, and then a cost per item over the set amount. The reason we use this method is that the end cost of the job is generally much closer to the price quoted. Not always the exact price as things do happen during testing, and under estimating the number of items to be tested is much more common than getting it right. This method of pricing allows for that to some degree, and if there is a big difference, it's much easier to look at the next package up and make clients aware of how the price will change from the quote. This is something we will be looking at on another day, but concludes why price is our first consideration.

            Location

Two options here, local or national. National companies are usually better known with higher prices, with local companies offering cheaper rates for the work. This can be said of most service or product providers. Still, if going local, look further away than you thought you should. There are many 'local companies' willing to travel further to find work. Officially, Purplewood PAT Testers cover, Sussex, Brighton, Kent and London - But would go much further if the size of the job is appropriate. The further we go, the less likely it is we'll be the cheapest quote, but we're willing to try and so are many other companies.

Possibly the least thought of consideration before booking. When do you need your PAT Testing to be done? When is it due? The key here is to book as far in advance as you can. Obvious? Apparently not. We get many last minute bookings here at Purplewood PAT Testers and whilst we will accommodate as many as we can, we cannot fit them all in. Set yourself a reminder, 2 months in advance is a good guide to ensure you can get the PAT Testing company you want, when you want them.

Everyone looks for good ratings, at least we think so. The critical thing here though, is not the number, but whats written. I'm as guilty as anyone for this, but taking a quick look at the numbers, 5/5 for example, will not necessarily mean anything. PAT Testing is a very common service, offered by not just PAT Testing businesses, but electrical companies and electricians. With this being the case, take the time to look at the reviews carefully to ensure that 5/5 review is actually for PAT Testing rather than other offered services.

Are you choosing a reputable business? Check to see if the business you are considering are members of trade organisations or associations. Purplewood PAT Testers, for example, are members of PATTA (Portable Appliance Testing Trade Association), but there are others. Do a little research and make sure.

All in all, the main thing to take away from this blog is that, whilst we hope you'll consider Purplewood PAT Testers, you simply take the time to ensure you are getting the best deal for your business. Now, just to repeat, this is our first ever blog post, so please be kind in the comments. Obviously there are other considerations to think about, we haven't listed them all, but do let us know what you think.

Purplewood PAT Testers - Our January 2020 social media ad is our best yet. We think so anyway. Much more relevant to what we do, rather than having a seasonal element. There will be more adverts to come, both seasonal and PAT Test related.
